GW: Track Ideas

Motorcycle Emptiness, Manic Street Preachers
  • Performance based- though it is more conceptual, as it is not within the band/gig setting.
  • First person narrative, the lead singer directly addresses the camera- but he wears sunglasses, thus giving him a sense of absence
  • panning shots and more camera movement during conceptual elements of the video and to show the whole band
  • The idea of loneliness is addressed, as the band members are each shown in situations where they are alone or lonely within a crowd- the latter creates a certain subversive attitude linking to band image.
  • There is a short focus on the other significant 'star' of the band, Richey Edwards, who was often involved in the media and media controversy. He was the poster boy but also the most  destructive band member.
  • Dissolves transition scenes from one to the other.
Slave to The Wage- Placebo
  • Largely Narrative based video, with the band incorporated within the same setting and the lead singer performing.
  • Large element of social commentary within an exaggerated version of offices etc and 'the system', which is cohesive in accordance with the band image
  • All of the characters have a physical trait  that is reminiscent of the lead singer, meaning that although absent, he is also present (matching dyer's idea of Star Image)
  • The video uses CGI to remove it from reality and to represent the dissolving of the conditioned ideas and need to get away from it. They are used symbolically and artistically.
Opposite- Biffy Clyro
  • Performance based conceptual video- the singer performs whilst walking through the streets, he does not look at the camera. meanwhile the image of the band in a car crash regularly crops up, until elements of both are combined.
  • Use of the tree imagery- the bare tree matches the album cover
  • Camera tilts and tracking shots keep the video dynamic.
  • Objects disappear or become contorted in pov shots, suggesting mental instability/issues, which are often associated with the lead.
An element of symbolism and conceptual ideas is prevalent throughout all of these videos.

  1. I like your choices from a possible narrative point of view, but feel songs that are more driving and heavier would make for a better performance side to our video. I think we should look to find a good mix.
